The Deutsches Rotes Kreuz Vermisstenbildliste was a compendium of missing soldiers, consisting of 199 bound volumes. The books had been assembled from the end stages of World War 2, up until 1957 by the German Red Cross. Its purpose was intended for soldiers who were returning home, to identify lost comrades, giving the families of the soldiers some closure in concerning the whereabouts of their loved ones. Families or friends would provide identification by photograph, submitting any image that was available. In many cases there was no photographic evidence of the person's existence at all. In the 199 volumes, they strove to include the 1,148,000 missing members of the German Wehrmacht.
In many cases, I would be the same age as these men when they died or disappeared. I am drawn to the images of them because of their likeness to everyday people. I saw them on the train this morning. I see the faces of my friends. The images reveal a son’s expression of youthful exuberance or a father’s middle-aged pensiveness. Sometimes I see myself in the way one cuts his hair short, or how he wears his hat. They become individuals again through my selection. I archive them, but I am also preserving people in this practice; and creating a new relationship with a subject who is missing.
The information provided on each photograph is the subjects name, occupation, date of birth, place of birth, rank in the German military, the place of disappearance, and the date of disappearance. Boxes that are crossed out signify that the person has been confirmed killed in action, or death in POW captivity. All the others, are men still considered missing.
